Klara and the Sun: review of Taika Waititi’s film about loneliness and machines

In short: Klara and the Sun is the adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, written and directed by Taika Waititi, with Jenna Ortega as Klara, an Artificial Friend designed to keep a teenager company. It reaches cinemas on 22 October, according to Cinemex. It is a slow, intimate story about loneliness. My take: it wraps around you slowly and does not let go until the end, and Ortega is the best part of it.

My review

Review written with access before release.

Klara and the Sun was a different experience for me. It is a film that wraps around you slowly, with a soft melancholy that does not let go until the end. Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, it tells the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend (AF) designed to fight young people’s loneliness in a dystopian future.

Jenna Ortega is fantastic. She gives Klara a curiosity and an empathy that are moving, above all because she is still a machine trying to understand something as human as love, loyalty and loss. The film, directed by Taika Waititi, keeps the novel’s reflective tone, although it takes it to a larger scale.

It is not an action film and it has no surprising twists. It is an intimate story about what it means to be alone and what we are willing to do not to be. There is one scene, when Klara tries to understand the pain of Josie, the teenager she keeps company, that left me with a lump in my throat. If you like stories that make you think and feel at the same time, this one is for you.

Key fact: Klara and the Sun, written and directed by Taika Waititi from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, reaches cinemas on 22 October with Jenna Ortega as Klara.
