The four phases of the purchase
A private purchase has no professional seller to gather the paperwork. Each party must do it, which is why a clear order helps. The list below shows what is checked in each phase and who holds the information.
| Phase | What is checked | Who checks or provides it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Choose | Make, year, mileage and seller in the listing | Buyer, using listing filters |
| 1. Choose | Inspected and Good history badges | ASSA Market, per its website |
| 2. Check | Mechanical condition and inspection report | Authorized workshop |
| 2. Check | Single Vehicle Registry in the seller’s name | Seller presents, buyer verifies |
| 3. Pay | Payment confirmed before handing over the car | Both parties |
| 4. Transfer | Digital card, current-year inspection and IDs | Panama City Mayor’s Office |
| 4. Transfer | Single Vehicle Registry in the buyer’s name | ATTT |
Phase 1: choose and make contact
ASSA Market’s Cars for sale in Panama page shows listings with photo, make, model, price, year, mileage and seller name. It filters by make and model, year, mileage, price, badges, seller type, body type, transmission and location, and can hide sold cars. According to the site, a buyer interested in a car contacts the seller and arranges a visit to see it.
To narrow the search by model, Radar Panamá published the ranking of best-selling brands by ADAP, and for resale value, the guide on how much a car depreciates in Panama.
The badges are explained in the platform’s FAQ. Inspected means the car was checked at an authorized workshop and the report is shown in the listing. Good history means the car has no reported claims in the last 5 years of being insured with ASSA. Both are platform badges and do not replace whatever check each buyer decides to make.
Phase 2: check the vehicle
There are two distinct checks. The first is mechanical: according to the site, ASSA Market’s inspection covers engine, brakes, suspension, steering, tires, lighting, electrical system, transmission, cooling and interior, takes 15 to 30 minutes and is carried out only by workshops authorized by the platform. It is optional. Detail on each system is on the inspection page.
The second is documentary. The Panama City Mayor’s Office asks for the Single Vehicle Property Registry and the current-year Vehicle Inspection Certificate for the transfer, and the ATTT asks for the Single Vehicle Registry in the seller’s name and a valid vehicle inspection. Asking the seller for them before paying avoids finding a missing document once the price is agreed.
- See the car in person at the visit arranged by buyer and seller.
- Ask for the inspection report if the listing carries the badge, or arrange an inspection at an authorized workshop if not.
- Check that the Single Vehicle Registry is in the seller’s name.
- Verify that the inspection certificate is for the current year.
- Confirm with the seller who will attend the transfer and whether someone holds a notarized authorization.
- Check the car’s insurance coverage with the ASSA quote tool before handover.
Phase 3: pay with proof
ASSA Market’s FAQ advises confirming that payment has been made before handing over the car, using secure methods such as verified bank transfers and not sharing unnecessary personal or banking data. The platform also offers a sales contract template, for voluntary use, to document the agreement between buyer and seller, and a downloadable buying and selling guide.
According to the site, safe meetings are meetings arranged between buyer and seller in spaces provided by ASSA Market, managed by its team and free of charge for both parties.
ASSA Market’s cars section filters by badge, make, year and location to compare listings from private sellers.
Phase 4: transfer
The transfer takes place at two offices, the Panama City Mayor’s Office and the ATTT. At the first, the Single Vehicle Property Registry, the year’s inspection certificate, IDs or passports and the digital transfer card are submitted as original and copy. The second asks, among other documents, for the original Single Vehicle Registry signed and notarized and the Judicial Investigation Directorate certification. The official pages publish neither total time nor fee.
ASSA Market’s site says the process can be done independently or through the service it recommends, and that if a party cannot attend, a notarized power of attorney can be granted to a third party.

Common mistakes
- Paying before seeing the Single Vehicle Registry in the seller’s name.
- Assuming a badge replaces the buyer’s own check of the car.
- Handing over the car before confirming payment is complete.
- Leaving the transfer for later, with the vehicle already in the buyer’s hands.
- Sharing personal or banking data without need.
